AI Agents on Corporate Laptops Pose Unseen Insider Threats

Unmonitored AI tools can store credentials and access internal systems, creating a hidden insider risk for Australian SMEs that must be addressed through strict oversight and security policies.

A recent expert webinar highlighted a growing but often invisible danger: AI agents running on employee laptops that silently store API keys, database passwords and other privileged credentials. These agents operate without direct supervision, effectively becoming insider threats that can bypass traditional security controls.

For small and medium‑sized businesses in Australia, the problem is especially acute. Many organisations rely on a handful of IT staff or external managed service providers, and the rapid adoption of AI productivity tools can outpace the implementation of proper governance. Without clear ownership, an AI assistant can inadvertently expose critical data to external actors or malicious insiders.

Security leaders are urged to treat AI tools like any other privileged software. This means maintaining an up‑to‑date inventory of AI applications, enforcing multi‑factor authentication for any credential storage, applying the principle of least privilege, and monitoring for anomalous access patterns through endpoint detection and response solutions.

Australian companies should align their response with the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s Essential Eight recommendations, ensuring regular patching, application whitelisting, and strict access controls. Engaging a trusted MSP to audit AI tool usage and to enforce security baselines can help mitigate the risk before it materialises.

Wepro Technology, a Darwin‑based IT services and training provider, offers cybersecurity awareness programmes and certification courses such as CCNA and upcoming CEH and CHFI modules, helping staff recognise and manage the hidden dangers posed by unsupervised AI agents.
