Optus announced it is working to deliver near‑real‑time data access across its network, responding to heightened regulatory expectations around data transparency and consumer privacy.

To achieve this, Optus has engaged Confluent, the company behind the Apache Kafka streaming platform, enabling the telco to extract and stream information from older customer‑facing applications and its Oracle back‑end in near real time.

The move is significant for Australian businesses because it signals a shift toward faster data availability, allowing more timely reporting to regulators such as the ACCC and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

For small and medium‑size enterprises, the development underscores the importance of modernising data pipelines and ensuring that their own systems can support real‑time monitoring and compliance reporting, especially as regulators look for more immediate insight into data handling practices.

Companies seeking assistance with data architecture, compliance or upskilling their staff can turn to local specialists like Wepro Technology, which offers both managed IT services and training programmes that include networking and security certifications relevant to modern data environments.
